Pakistan receives $1.3 billion from IMF under support programme

Pakistan has received $1.3 billion from the International Monetary Fund under ongoing financial support programmes aimed at stabilising the country’s economy and strengthening foreign exchange reserves.
In an official statement, the State Bank of Pakistan confirmed the transfer and said the funds were released under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF) programmes.
According to the central bank, the IMF Executive Board approved the latest disbursement on May 8 following the successful completion of the third programme review. The board approved 760 million Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) for Pakistan, while an additional 154 million SDRs were cleared under the second tranche of the RSF arrangement.

The State Bank said Pakistan has received a total of 914 million SDRs in this latest release. Officials clarified that the amount would not be converted into Pakistani rupees but would instead be added directly to the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
The central bank further stated that the inflow would officially appear in the foreign exchange reserve figures for the week ending May 15, 2026. Economists say the funds are expected to provide temporary support to Pakistan’s external financing position and help maintain exchange rate stability.
Under the current IMF arrangement, Pakistan has so far received approximately $4.6 billion in total disbursements. The country entered the 37-month EFF programme in September 2024 as part of efforts to address fiscal pressures, improve economic reforms, and restore investor confidence.
Financial analysts believe continued IMF backing remains crucial for Pakistan as it faces challenges related to inflation, debt servicing, and balance-of-payments management.
The latest disbursement is also expected to strengthen confidence among international lenders and financial markets regarding Pakistan’s economic recovery programme.
